  • A flashlight,
  • a light raincoat,
  • Insect repellent,
  • some good walking / hiking shoes (something good and comfortable)
  • It would be wise to travel with some local currency, XCD-Easter Caribbean dollar EC$ in your pocket if possible.

Q : Do I need a guide for Hiking in Dominica

A : Varies : It is splendidly beautiful. You can hike directly from the lodge to an abundance of awe-inspiring waterfalls and other sites at no cost. If you want to wander, it is easy. If you want a guide just let us know and we can organize one for you. A guide is a great way not only to get to know more about the nature during hike, but also a good opportunity to meet a Dominican and chat about local life and culture.

We STRONGLY RECOMMEND A GUIDE for The boiling lake, Morne Diablotin, Perdu-temps and some segments of the Waitukubuli national trail.

Some people take guides for the knowledge of the flora and Fauna, some to show the way, some for company, (especially if traveling alone), others simply to share the experience with a kind and friendly local.

Q : Transportation

Buses are cheap and good enough. It will cost you about 9 Eastern Caribbean dollars to get from here to Roseau, the capital, and around EC$ 20 each way to get to say Portsmouth or Laudat, where the boiling lake hike normally begins.

Buses are good towards Roseau in the morning from 6 to 9, then it goes quiet until about 1.30pm., when the afternoon return trips from Roseau begin, bringing back the people that went to town, Roseau, in the morning.

Last bus back from Roseau leaves at 5 pm. The bus stop is outside Jays bookstore in Kennedy avenue, and the bus leaves when it is full; SO BE PATIENT.

Each village, across the island, has its own share of buses, and each goes from the village to Roseau and back again. It is quite simple. If you need to go anywhere else apart from Roseau, you wait at a junction for the relevant bus to pass, heading for the village you are going to.

There are no buses on Sundays and public holidays, and very few on a Saturday afternoon.

Hitchhiking works really well, and it is still safe for everyone and you will reach your destination. Weekends are slower simply because there is not much traffic, and Sundays no buses, no shops, but loads of nature and church goers.

Taxis are readily available as well, and we can arrange them for you with notice.

If you choose taxis, they need a vehicle with high clearance for our access road, a low car will touch the road, and some taxis will leave you 1 km away on the main road; check before you ride !!!

IF YOU TAKE A TAXI, AND IF THEY LEAVE YOU AT THE MAIN ROAD, WE MAY NOT HAVE A VEHICLE TO COLLECT YOU; SO PLEASE DO NOT EXPECT IT.

car rentals during your stay in Dominica, please tell them that I recommended you to them, thank you.

If you do decide to rent a vehicle, we strongly recommend a jeep as our access road is lumpy and bumpy, and a low car may touch the ground occasionally, beware !!:

Whether you arrive at one of the airports, or one of the ferry terminals, there are normally plenty of taxis waiting. Roseau/Canefield is about 45 minutes to an hour, Melville Hall about an hour and 15 minutes. Expect to pay around EC$ 180 / US$ 70 from Roseau, and EC$ 220 / US$ 85 from Melville Hall.

Community life, shops & general safety

The local village is great, and full of cool people who welcome all of our visitors into the community. Most guests end up befriending at least one or two locals during their stay here.

To reach the village is about a 45 minute hike, steep in some parts, on a mountain trail, or 10 minutes by car via the road. That is where the nearest stores are.

It is well worth trying at least one of our community life activities during your stay. Click here for the full list to choose from

As a member of pack for a purpose, we encourage guests to donate small items to our worthwhile community causes. CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS

Dominica is a safe island with a relatively low crime rate, violent crime is very rare and in our particular area any kind of crime is unusual. Guests should be more aware in Roseau and larger towns. Almost every single person in our village is kind and welcoming.

There are no dangerous animals, no poisonous creepy crawlies (though plenty of interesting ones – like the late night fire fly shows), and sometime you may get the pleasure of meeting a few tropical mosquitos.
