The Sustainable Living Initiative Centre, (S.L.I.C.) Dominica
The Sustainable Living Initiative Centre (SLIC) is an NGO formed in 2004 to promote the awareness of environmental issues. Our specfic focus is promoting the use of simple technology to minimize negative impacts on the environment and conserve natural resources in Dominica. We are also involved in educating the population regarding mitigatig climate change.
Membership is open to all interested people at a cost of EC$5 with corporate and international rates available on request. Workshops are on subjects such as solar, hydro and wind installations and are held on Saturdays from 9am to 4pm. This is at a cost of EC$20 for members and EC$50 for non-members.
We have received funding from a number of external sources such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the (BHC) British High Commission. Currently we are undertaking the following projects:
1. Sustainable Living Education Program (BHC) which is taking place in the schools. I have to visit all the schools around the island to teach a course on climate change and mitigation. This has been going well and will come to an end in August.
2. Six alternative energy installations in Primary Schools bordering national parks (UNDP) and GEF(Global Environment Facility) Small Grants. This has started recently and so far we have put up one system at The Morne Prosper Primary School-A wind turbine.
3. NS Optimum Computer Project, a private firm in the UK has obtained donations of used computers. These have been refurbished, shipped and installed by NS Optimum in schools throughout Dominica over the past two years. A further shipment is expected in 2009.
4. The SLIC Classroom Project (BHC) has also started. We have purchased used containers for conversion into a classroom to host alternative energy workshops. We are also planning to use the classroom itself as a demonstration unit with a solar system and a compost toilet.
