Meet The Hosts of EcoFets 2009

Jill Parlee - EcoFest Co-ordinator and Jem Winston - Managing Director, Rosalie Forest Eco Lodge

jill parlee
Hello, my name is Jill Parlee and I am the event coordinator for the Dominica International EcoFest 2009. I have been traveling through the Caribbean for almost a year now. Before coming to Dominica to coordinate the festival, I was working in Barbados for the first biodiesel company on the island; a locally-owned venture. The business started in 2004 as a proprietorship and I helped to expand it into a small working public company.

I first fell in love with the Caribbean during a university semester abroad. Included in my studies for responsible water resource management, I participated in an internship with the United Nations Development Programme Small Grants Programme. The internship focused on collaboration between organic farmers and the less-abled community on the island. Through this experience I learned hands-on the importance of respecting the natural environment and its skillful inhabitants. Particularly it is of even greater importance to recognize these unique connections in a small island developing state.

I earned my Bachelors degree in Sustainable Businesses from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. During my time in Canada I fortunately gained two valuable experiences for event coordination. I participated on the committee for the McGill Business Conference on Sustainability. For this we were able to bring together many students from across Canada to learn from eco-friendly companies and individuals, including General Electric and David Suzuki. I also served on the volunteer staff for the St. Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival. As one of the largest theater festivals in operation run almost completely by volunteers, I learned the amazing capacity of individuals to help one another.

Throughout my experiences I’ve learned that each person can contribute greatly in making the planet better for all inhabitants and the earth as well. The Dominica International EcoFest is set to show the world once again that we all can help.

jem winston Hi there, my name is Jem Winston, and I am the managing Director of Rosalie Forest eco lodge and the Director of Education for S.L.I.C The Sustainable Living Initiative Centre. I moved to Dominica from the UK at the beginning of 2002, to build and run my own eco lodge called 3 Rivers Eco Lodge. I am proud of the achievements of both 3 Rivers my subsequent venture Rosalie Forest Eco Lodge.

The lodges have been widely acclaimed in the international press for our environmental achievements, and we have won numerous international awards for our projects, including two consecutive years the American Express and Caribbean Hotel Association green hotel of the year award, The International Hotel and Restaurant Association Environmental award, the responsible tourism award for best technology, and many others.

I have also been invited many times as a guest speaker to various conferences and meetings including the Green Globe 21 Green tourism conference and the International Hotel and restaurant association annual congress.

In 2005 along with some expert friends, I established our NGO The Sustainable Living Initiative Centre (SLIC) whos aim is educate and inform Dominicans about the benefits and use of renewable energy technologies through hands on practical workshops. The NGO also offers micro loans to members to enable them to purchase their own equipment.

In collaboration with the lodge, the NGO and other stakeholders, I am proud to have been instrumental in a number of major community projects here in Dominica, including Computer Mission Dominica which has so far seen the delivery of over 500 refurbished computers from the UK to schools here in Dominica, along with training and software, a scholarship fund for the local pre school, and a new library for our local village.

Among other things, I also offer eco consultancy to individuals or businesses who wish to green their projects or train their staff, as well as information on how to convert a property to the full use of renewable energy technologies and organic farming practices.

I look forward to welcoming you to EcoFest 2009, and hope that you will have a memorable experience at EcoFest, Rosalie Forest Eco Lodge and The Commonwealth of Dominica, The Nature Island of The Caribbean.
