Meet The Hosts of EcoFets 2009
Jill Parlee - EcoFest Co-ordinator and Jem Winston - Managing Director, Rosalie Forest Eco Lodge
Hello, my name is Jill Parlee and I am the event coordinator for the Dominica International EcoFest 2009. I have been traveling through the Caribbean for almost a year now. Before coming to Dominica to coordinate the festival, I was working in Barbados for the first biodiesel company on the island; a locally-owned venture. The business started in 2004 as a proprietorship and I helped to expand it into a small working public company.I first fell in love with the Caribbean during a university semester abroad. Included in my studies for responsible water resource management, I participated in an internship with the United Nations Development Programme Small Grants Programme. The internship focused on collaboration between organic farmers and the less-abled community on the island. Through this experience I learned hands-on the importance of respecting the natural environment and its skillful inhabitants. Particularly it is of even greater importance to recognize these unique connections in a small island developing state.
I earned my Bachelors degree in Sustainable Businesses from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. During my time in Canada I fortunately gained two valuable experiences for event coordination. I participated on the committee for the McGill Business Conference on Sustainability. For this we were able to bring together many students from across Canada to learn from eco-friendly companies and individuals, including General Electric and David Suzuki. I also served on the volunteer staff for the St. Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival. As one of the largest theater festivals in operation run almost completely by volunteers, I learned the amazing capacity of individuals to help one another.
Throughout my experiences I’ve learned that each person can contribute greatly in making the planet better for all inhabitants and the earth as well. The Dominica International EcoFest is set to show the world once again that we all can help.
